Star Matthew McConaughey and the true story of a teenage boy who, in 1980s Detroit — not a pleasant place — became an informant for the FBI and later a drug dealer himself, were the draws that got me to the theatre to watch this film. But, what should have been a compelling movie fell surprisingly flat. Not that any of the acting is bad, but the drama was missing; what remains is just a whole lot of bleakness (of the times, of the duplicity of the authorities, and of the ending, which I won’t spoil for you here).
