This German entry for a best foreign Oscar pic has been very highly praised by many critics and I can see their perspective, up to a point.  The story is simple:  an estranged father, a practical joker by nature, is concerned that his very serious, career-driven, management consultant daughter is missing out on the joys of life, so he decides to do something to help her find laughter, whether that help is wanted or not.  The film (at over 160 minutes, is longer than I think it needs to be) is played out slowly, with moments of laugh-at-loud humour mixed with some flashes of black humour.  The actors (who are known primarily for their stage work) are very good and the story hits on some important themes.  Bring your patience to the theatre and I think you will enjoy.  (Subtitled.)
