The World Before Her

  • Post category:.

A very interesting documentary juxtaposing two groups of young ladies (between the ages of 15 and 25) in modern day India — one consisting of the 20 finalists for the Miss India contest meeting for a month-long boot camp, and the other group consisting of ladies from rural villages who have come to study and train at a Hindu fundamentalist camp, where they learn to believe Hinduism is the supreme religion, that India must be protected by all means from corrupting Western influence, and to learn how to defend themselves.  What was most interesting was how the filmmakers showed women in both groups grappling with some of the same issues, such as how female independence clashes with parental values.
