One of the bleakest but most unique films I’ve ever seen, this story of power politics and criminal activity among the students at a boarding school for the deaf in Ukraine, has no dialogue whatsoever and no subtitles to help the audience interpret the sign-language between the characters. The sounds — footsteps, the slapping of hands engaged in sign language, of doors opening and closing, etc. — take on a meaning here that is very different from those in a typical film. There are no real upbeat moments in this one, so not for the faint of heart.
