The Other Side of Hope

Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki is at it again, another film with absurdist and deadpan humour, characters who never seem to have anything but a neutral expression on their faces, despite whatever else is going on, and  language seems just a bit different than a normal person’s.  And once again, he tells a tale of refugees, in this case a young man from Syria who has snuck into Finland on a ship (and taken in by a gruff salesman who decides to enter the restaurant business, with not too much success).  But there is a lot of humanity in this story and you’ll likely be both puzzled and intrigued.  (Subtitles.)
