Although the director says it not a story about Scientology, it doesn’t matter. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is excellent as a Ron L. Hubbard character — a charming, smart, and a sometimes emotionally vicious leader of a cult. Joaquin Phoenix plays the broken WWII vet who takes to the cult as a substitute for a family. The action is the dialogue and it is plentiful. Don’t see it if you are drowsy.
