Joaquin Phoenix is terrific as man of many parts (some good, some not so good) in 1921 NYC, who takes in, watches over, and sometimes obsesses about, women who have reached Ellis Island but have no one else to turn to. There’s obsession, jealously and emotional pain involved for all. The wonderful Marion Cotillard is billed as the lead, but I don’t think her role gave her the range that Phoenix’s did. Enjoyable.
