The Florida Project

An impressive, engaging and delightful, yet melancholy, visit with several six-year-olds — we get to view the world through their eyes — spending their aimless summer days at a low-rent Florida motel (with Willem Defoe as the kind-hearted manager) in the shadow of Disney World.  These kids are adorable (and great budding actors), and while they are out and about having fun and purposely causing trouble, their lives are more difficult than they realize, with single moms who live on the margins.  Don’t be fooled by the (relatively) carefree attitude of the movie’s first half — things get a lot more serious as we approach the end.
