The Farewell

A heartfelt, human, touching and effective story written and directed by Lulu Wang (her first film, I believe).  Based, as the movie will tell you, on an actual lie, this autobiographical story centres around a Chinese family which (for the most part) believes that there is no reason to tell its matriarch — who was born and still lives in China — of her diagnosis of late stage cancer.  The matriarch’s far-flung family — two sons who were born in China but have lived for many years in Japan and America with their respective spouses and children — comes up with an excuse to head back home and share with their beloved mama what they believe is little remaining time.  All struggle with the lie at the centre of their visit, and we struggle along with them.  Terrific acting, especially Awkwafina as the America-raised granddaughter who doesn’t understand her parents’ perspective and is deeply troubled by having to lie. (Some subtitles.)
