Queen and Slim

In one the worst cinematic first-dates ever (courtesy of Tinder), an African-American couple (Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith) on their way home from dinner are pulled over by a white cop for a routine traffic stop. A misunderstanding occurs, which leads to an attempted arrest and the shooting death, in self-defence, of the cop.  Not expecting justice from the justice system, the couple make a interstate run for it, with the police one step behind. What makes this story different is that the police-camera footage of the traffic stop and lethal altercation goes viral, and the couple are seen by many in the black community as modern-day martyrs, living symbols of the scourge of police oppression. Kaluuya and Turner-Smith are compelling, even when the film occasionally gets formulaic or a bit over-the-top. It’s a crime-drama, a story of racism, and romance that mostly works.
