Always an entertaining package of the five Oscar nominated short live-action films. This year’s winner, Sing (from Hungary), about a competition-winning children’s choir in which things aren’t what they seem to be, is terrific. Also terrific is Timecode (Spain), almost entirely dialogue free, a quiet wonder to behold, which takes place entirely in an underground parking garage. I won’t spoil the plot, but it’s a delightful 15 or so minutes. Lady on the Train (Switzerland) is based on a true story and is sweet tale of a getting-older widow who develops a “relationship” with the (unseen) conductor(?) of a high-speed train which races by her house every day. The other two shorts, Enemies Within (France) — set in a French interrogation room where an Algerian man is questioned about his links to terror, and Silent Nights (Denmark) — a not very subtle take on a relationship between a Danish shelter worker and a Ghanian refugee she befriends — are ok. (Subtitled.)
