Trying to explain this story in a few sentences would be, in my estimation, a waste of time. Instead, let me set the scene: A remote house, a poet (Javier Bardem), his wife (Jennifer Lawrence), uninvited stranger guests (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfieffer), then assorted additional uninvited guests — each and every character unnamed in the film — then mayhem with spiritual and religious over-and-undertones that I could not for the life of me explain. Director Darren Aronofsky (of Black Swan fame) has created something I couldn’t take my eyes off of yet I couldn’t make heads or tails of. It’s a metaphor(s) for something, and that something is probably going to be different for each viewer. It’s almost like not being able to avert your gaze from the scene of an accident. My vote for one of the most perplexing films of all time.
