Moonlight

Powerful, beautiful and sad are words that appropriately describe this film — based on a play — of a boy’s painful journey to adulthood — with three amazingly good actors portraying the young boy, then the high-schooler, then his adult self — set among a black community in Miami, starting sometime in the 1980s. The pain in this man’s life comes from being gay (read: different) in a macho culture that treats this difference with disgust and violence.  Superb storytelling, terrific acting.
