A slick, over-simplified but enjoyable tale of a time in the life of the great African-American lawyer (and later, the first US Supreme Court justice), Thurgood Marshall. Set in 1941 and inspired by actual events, Marshall, via the NAACP, recruits a (white) Jewish Connecticut insurance lawyer to be the face of the defence for a black man accused of raping a white woman. Chadwick Boseman is a commanding screen presence and he does a good job of making Marshall look heroic. A decent and well-meaning film, but it skates relatively lightly across the surface of the deeply racist environment.
