Luce

  • Post category:.

This film, about a star high-school student and athlete, Luce, an example to his (especially African American) peers and the apple of his adoptive parents’ eye, is sure to leave you puzzled as to what is really going on.  Luce — adopted as a young child soldier from Eritrea and brought to very (upper) middle class America — may or may not be up to something no good. If you can find answers to the film’s puzzles, please let me know.  Kevin Harrison Jr. is very good in the title role, and Naomi Watts and Tim Roth play his confused and increasingly worried parents, and Octavia Spencer is impressive (as usual) as Luce’s teacher, kicking into gear everyone’s worries about what Luce is up to. In this story the journey is definitely more important than the destinations.  Prepare to be left without answers.
