Lion

This based-on-a-true-story (which was based on a book) film deserves its label as a crowd pleaser, and as a bonus, the storytelling and acting is very good.  There are two parts, set decades apart, to the story:  In the 1980s, a 5-year-old boy in a poor Indian village is separated from his brother and ends up, alone and confused, 1500 km or so from home (after falling asleep on an empty train), taken in by an orphanage, and then adopted by an Australian couple (one of who is played by Nicole Kidman looking distinctly unglamorous). The second half is the quest by the now twenty-something boy to learn where he is from.  Dev Patel is fine as the older boy, but the show-stealer is the young actor Sunny Pawar who is mesmerizing (and adorable) as the youngster.  (Subtitles in much of the first half.)
