Ben Foster is excellent (as is an up-and-coming young actress, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, as his teenage daughter) as a single father and US vet with some form of PTSD who, because he can’t stand to be tied down and deal with other people, lives — with his daughter — in the forests of Portland, Oregon. The story begins with being evicted from the forest by the authorities and the involvement of social services with his daughter. Foster’s character is quiet (as is the film) but expressive, and his love for his daughter shines bright, but it is fascinating to watch how the two of them deal with the unfolding situations, especially as his daughter begins to question whether the life they lead is one that suits her.
