Judy

Renee Zellweger is tremendous as the extremely talented and fascinating Judy Garland, a woman who started as a young girl in the frequently abusive (especially to women) Hollywood studio system, shot to stardom in the Wizard of Oz, and whose life descended into one of alcohol and drug addiction, combined with a whole of lot of self-pity.  This biopic is based on the musical stage show, End of the Rainbow, and focusses on the last part of her life, with Judy travelling to London for a series of shows that she hopes will prove audiences still love her, as well as allowing her to earn enough money to pay the rent and make a home for her two young children (who by this time are in the care of their father back in the U.S.).  Unfortunately, apart from Zellweger’s performance, the rest of the movie is cliché-ish, and at almost two hours, feels even longer. Garland deserved better.
