JoJo Rabbit

While the reactions of critics and audiences have been decidedly mixed, folks who like the film seem to like it a lot.  (It won the People’s Choice award at the 2019 TIFF.)  Director Taika Waititi also stars as a 10-year-old boy’s imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler.  (Yes, you read that correctly!)  Set in a German town during the latter days of WW II, the story follows our boy (very nicely played by Roman Griffin Davis) as he desperately strives to be the best Nazi youth he can be, only to find to his chagrin he doesn’t have the heart for it.  Plus he has a mother (the always enjoyable Scarlett Johansson) who is active in the Resistance, and who is hiding a Jewish girl in a secret room.  This is one bizarre fairy tale, with satire that was a bit too in-your-face for my taste.  An “A” for effort though.
