Honeyland

The most unique documentary I’ve seen in quite a while.  Filmed over three years, we follow the trials and tribulations of a middle-aged woman living in an isolated corner of a Balkan mountain range, who cares for her elderly and fading mother while tending to her honeybees (her meagre earnings come solely from sale of small amounts of honey to folks in other towns).  Her tough but peaceful existence is disrupted with the arrival of an itinerant family who take advantage of her good nature and squander what nature has to offer.  A parable for our times, indeed. Amazing photography.  It’s hard to believe it’s a documentary. (Subtitles.)
