Gleason

Speaking of inspirational and emotional stories, this is the true and amazing tale of Steve Gleason, a former NFL star, who was diagnosed with ALS (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease) at 34 years of age, just weeks before he learns that his wife Michel is pregnant with their first child.   Gleason decides then to create a video journal for his unborn son in the knowledge that the disease will likely claim his life within years.  While they endure the day-to-day ravages and consequences of the disease, and we watch them, up-close, struggle, laugh and cry, Steve and Michel (with the help of friends and family) also are able to build an effective foundation to provide many ALS sufferers with support, resources and hope.  It has been said that Steve and Michel are heroes, and I agree.  To which I would add that they are extremely brave for allowing us to watch them at their most vulnerable moments (as well as at their best).  One of the most powerful things — among a number of powerful things) about this film was witnessing the toll this took on Michel, a free-spirit who devoted her life entirely to caring for Steve and their son.  Although her support never wavered, this incredibly strong woman is drained, emotionally and physically, as we watch (although the tendency for viewers may be to keep the focus on Steve). The pain felt by both is palpable. (Definitely not for the faint of heart).
