The always captivating screen presence of Denzel Washington makes this a terrific film about alcohol and drug addiction and the lies one will tell himself and his family and friends to pretend that everything is under control.  Denzel carries it well for the movie’s almost 2.5 hr-length.  While the other characters do a fine job (in particular the role of his drug dependent girlfriend is handled without the usual Hollywood fantasy), they are only in orbit around him.  I didn’t lose interest for a minute of this relatively low-key drama.
