This Colombian film that was nominated for a foreign language Academy. The themes of colonization and the meaning (and the horrible consequences) of progress are very much in-your-face, but what really stands out is the cinematography (mostly shot in black and white) for this tale of two scientists in the deep Amazon searching for a sacred plant, on separate trips 30 years apart (although told in parallel) — early and mid-20th century — together with indigenous guides. A Heart of Darkness type of tale to witness the horrors that men can do to other men. (Subtitles.)
