A highly impressive performance by the young Elsie Fisher, who plays a, yes, eighth-grader — raised by a single dad — on the cusp of high school, with intensity and a range of emotions. On her own YouTube station she is confident enough to give advice to her audience on a wide-variety of subjects, but in “real” life struggles with acne, body-image challenges and other issues that make up the existence of many, if not most, adolescents. I’m sure many things in this restrained and touching story will ring true for all of us (including the dad whose daughter just can’t figure him out.) Sweet, aching and effective.
