Set in 1980, when the threat of a brash, foul-mouthed, young John McEnroe to Bjorn Borg’s hopes for a 5th Wimbledon championship was real, this film focusses on the lead-up to their on-court match (with many — perhaps too many — flashbacks to childhood for both men). Shia LaBeouf (as McEnroe) and Sverrir Gudnason (as Borg) look the parts, and feel the parts, but I got the impression that the writers were looking for easy/obvious answers in what makes these men tick. Decent film, but tries too hard for depth. (And the tennis scenes are nothing special.)
