Director (and one of the writers) Spike Lee at the top of his game. Based on the true story of how the first African-American cop in the Colorado Springs Police Department (a fine performance by John David Washington), along with a white colleague (Adam Driver in one of his best performances that I’ve seen), was able to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan in the late 1970s. (I won’t spoil the “how” of this infiltration.) Although it’s been several decades since this event took place, this movie’s reflections on race relations are very timely, in a telling infused with anger, humour and sadness, and wrapped in a very entertaining and well-put together whole. Much to ponder.
