Acclaimed director/writer Denys Arcand (responsible for film gems such as The Decline of the American Empire in 1986 and Leolo in 1992) returns with another take — billed as a sequel of sorts to the above-mentioned film on the how (the love of) money and greed can crush souls and bring down a society. This tale follows an overeducated — he has a PhD in Philosophy — and arrogant delivery man in Montreal who, as a witness to a crime, comes into a large amount of ill-gotten cash. The police are on the case, there are gangsters after the money, a high-priced escort may or may not be interested in him rather than his money, and a convicted money launderer who may or may not be on our protagonist’s side are all along for this ride. Add to this a lot of dialogue about how the system is rigged against the intelligent and the less intelligent, and what you end up is a more of bore than excitement, with a lack of subtlety.
