The Cave

(Seen at TIFF) Syrian director Feras Fayyad and his incredible team have crafted a documentary that will, I hope, amaze and disturb you and leave you not just despairing about the depths to which humanity can sink, but will fill you with reverence for the courage, kindness and utter humanity of some among us in the face of utter brutality.  This story takes place between 2016 and 2018 in a suburb of Damascus, where many dedicated people, mostly women, created an underground hospital system ā€” hence the title of this film ā€” where physicians, nurses and other kind and courageous souls tend to a wide range of injuries caused by Syrian government and allied forces.  The focus is on a young female pediatrician who has devoted her life to helping those in desperate need of care; Dr. Amani should be an inspiration to us all.  This is not a typical war documentary, filmed with handheld cameras, but one with an impressive production value (considering the location and security risks).  Highly, highly recommended.  (Subtitles.)  [Iā€™m not sure when this film will be released commercially, but keep your eyes open for it.]
