Frankie

  • Post category:.

The wonderful Isabelle Huppert plays the titular character, a famous and well-to-do actor who gathers her family — ex-husband, children, grandchildren and some of their significant others — in the exquisite and historic Portuguese town of Sintra for a big announcement.  (The scenery of this beautiful town on the big screen is alone worth the price of admission.)  The dialogue is witty, the acting is good (particularly by Brendan Gleeson as Frankie’s current husband, and Marisa Tomei as Frankie’s friend from NYC whom Frankie wants to set up with her son), but this is a slight tale from director/writer Ira Sachs which would have likely worked better on stage than on film.  It could have been much more.
