Based on a best-selling book, this is a powerful and moving story centred on a teenage girl (played by an outstanding Amandha Stenberg) who is forced to navigate the growing tensions between life at home with her family in a predominately black neighbourhood and her school life (and friends) at a preppy and mostly white high school in a neighbouring community. Yes, you know there is a yawning divide between the races in America, but this movie brings that message home with clarity and anger, even before a police shooting that puts the story into high gear.
