Pain and Glory

There’s little if any work of director and writer Pedro Almodovar that I don’t appreciate, and his latest achievement ranks high in his impressive filmography.  It’s the autobiographical story of a Spanish film director (humbly but exquisitely played by Antonio Banderas) who, while his body deteriorates, contemplates the arc of his life, from his childhood (Penelope Cruz, always impressive on the screen, plays his mother) to the intellectual and sensual passions of his younger adult years. Lovely storytelling, colourful cinematography and top-notch acting make this a very moving and human tale of life’s joys, pursuits and regrets. (Subtitles.)
