This is what happens when Spike Lee brings ancient Greek theatre (in this case, Lysistrata, where women collaborate to deny their menfolk sex until the men end (the Peloponnesian) war) to the mean and very deadly streets of modern day Chicago (hence the title of the film), and has every character speak in hip-hop style verse. I thought it was a powerful, visually arresting and witty (although definitely unsubtle) look at life/death through the lenses of race and sex. I expect there will be no middle ground among viewers on the merits of this film.
