Based on a Jane Austen novella, this is the type of film I feel I should appreciate, but to be honest, I couldn’t last till the last frame of this Whit Stillman film. For the first half or so of this period piece, listening to Lady Susan (Kate Beckinsale) work her magic on men and those in her orbit, I was impressed with the dialogue but eventually grew weary of almost all of the characters (although I’m not quite sure why this happened — or how I let it happen). However, given the number of people (and critics) who thought more highly of it than I did, I did not put it in my “films I don’t recommend” category — it may deserve a second chance.
