The Innocents

One of the most impressive and disturbing films I’ve seen this year.  Set in occupied Poland in 1945, it tells the true story of Russian soldiers who have raped many (all?) Benedictine nuns at a convent outside a small town.  What transpires as a number of nuns become pregnant is heart-wrenching and touches on themes such as religious faith, war, and mercy.  A French Red Cross doctor (female) helps the nuns deal with this physically and emotionally complex situation. Impressively acted. (Subtitled.)
