The Insult

A Best Foreign-Language Oscar nominee (from Lebanon) this year, the story is set in contemporary Beirut, and is a very powerful tale of how a single insult travelling from one middle class, common man to another — one Lebanese Christian, one Palestinian refugee —  can, in an environment where political, religious, and tribal differences touch almost every aspect of life,  tear families, communities, a city and a nation, apart.  The courtroom scenes are a bit melodramatic at times, but don’t hold that against this terrifically told and acted film.  (Subtitles.)
