Bye, Bye, Germany

  • Post category:.

This German film tries for a tough mix of themes and emotions — Holocaust-inspired drama (set in 1946 occupied Germany), comedy, friendship among survivors, etc.  — and is for the most part successful.  The story is about six Jewish men who band together to, at first, con unsuspecting German women into purchasing linens that they are made to believe were previously ordered by deceased family members; all of this work is done to afford to emigrate to the U.S.  A risk to this is a U.S. official who feels that the leader of these swindlers may have been a collaborator with the Nazis (a story thread that leads to flashbacks to the Nazi camps).  Good performances all around, although the romantic sub-plot between the leader and the US official could have been more effective.
