Set a few years in the future, the “upgrade” of the title refers to the technological upgrades to the body of our hero — a mechanic who eschews the modern lifestyle of those around him — received after he is made a quadriplegic, and his wife is killed, the result of an attack by thugs. Of course, this upgrade will be used as a means for revenge, but the strength of this film is about the choices that come along with the upgrade. Violent and/but very well executed (no pun intended) film. Logan Marshall-Green as the lead does inner torment well.
