Director/writer Nicole Holofcener usually has very interesting (and funny) things to say about (mostly female) people (e.g. Friends With Money), but this tale of a middle age (upper middle class) man (Ben Mendelsohn) who, in leaving his wife (movingly played by Edie Falco) and retiring from his life in Finance, finds life on the other side is not as green as he had expected/hoped. Yes, a familiar story, and one that is interesting generally when it doesn’t focus on its protagonist; the women (and the sons, with drug/alcohol related problems, of course) are much more intriguing.
