Capernaum

An amazing and heart-breaking performance from a non-professional very young actor (discovered on the streets of Beirut, this is his first film, which is the case for many of actors in the film) who portrays a neglected but kind, and very streetwise, 11-year-old child who sues his parents for neglect.  This film from Lebanon is told from the points of view of those on the outside of society looking in — street kids, refugees seeking safety (a number of the actors are/were refugees themselves), immigrants without official documents, etc. — and what an emotionally charged and challenging view it is.  Director Nadine Labaki (who also does some acting here) gives us large doses of sadness, humour and empathy, in a mix that brilliantly succeeds here.  (Subtitles.)
