Miss Bala

I did see the original Mexican film of the same name (from 2012) about a Mexican drug cartel that forced a beauty pageant winner to work for it (allegedly inspired by actual events), and had hoped that this American remake could improve on what should have been an interesting story.  Unfortunately, the new version, starring Gina Rodriguez (of Jane the Virgin fame, who does a fine job and the only character really that is more than a stereotype), as a make-up artist who frequently travels between L.A. and Tijuana, and finds herself, through no fault of her own, a cartel’s possession, is both silly and boring, with cartoonish versions of both bad and good hombres.
