This story about troubled love, set against the backdrop of 1950s (primarily) Warsaw, Berlin and Paris, is beautifully shot in black and white, has a lead actress (Joanna Kulig) with magnificent screen presence (and talent), and comes with a heaping helping of melodrama. We follow the two lovers (he a middle-age musician on a search for musical talent, she a brash young lady who can sing almost anything) across Europe as they break apart and get back together, several times, one risking Western freedom while the other enjoys fame behind the Iron Curtain. Not too much subtlety in this story, but I was taken in by this film for its 90 minutes or so. The director/writer is Pawel Pawlikowski, whose 2013 film Ida impressed me. A nominee for Best Foreign Film Oscar. (Subtitles.)
