The latest film from acclaimed Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (who made the Oscar winners “A Separation,” as well as “The Past”) is set in small town Spain where a wedding brings a family together (and, as expected, tears it apart). Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz — a married couple in real life — play former lovers, each now with their own families and lives, dealing with secrets that, perhaps, almost everybody in the town knows. A kidnapping on the night of the wedding puts into motion the (melo) drama, but for me the best part of the film is the slow accumulation of details about the lives of all the characters. The performances are what gives this movie its weight. (Subtitles.)
