Director/writer/producer Jordan Peele’s latest is not as sharp or as entertaining as his last (as director), the terrific Get Out from 2017, but I don’t say that as a criticism. This is an entertaining horror flick, doused in both blood and humour, about the lives of an African American family who are brought face to face with their doppelgangers — and not in a nice way — while trying to enjoy a vacation in California. Lupita Nyong’o, as the matriarch, whose past haunts her, is terrific here. The social commentary is focussed on class rather than race (as in Get Out), and while some of that commentary could have been more subtle (and therefore more effective), this is an entertaining tale.
