The actress Tillotama Shome is captivating as a poor young (widowed) woman from a small village in India who , to support her younger sister’s education back home, works as a live-in maid for a wealthy young man in Mumbai. While there are plenty of predictable moments in this film, there are some very nice touches that make this worth your time, from its portrayal of the invisibility of domestic workers and the caste system that keeps generations of people down, to how it treats the relationship between this servant and her employer. The supporting characters are not nearly as fleshed out as the maid’s, but given that the story is centred on her — she’s in almost every scene — a forgivable weakness. (Subtitles.)
