These two documentary films were part of the Syria: A Living History exhibit. The first one chronicles the journey of a Syrian-American orthopædic surgeon who volunteers to work in a hospital on the border of Syria and Turkey. As you can imagine, it’s a moving tale of wartime devastation and ordinary citizens trying to stay alive. The second film, more powerful in my mind than the first, consists of nine 5-minute or so shorts that resulted from providing camera phones to Syrian teen residents in a Jordanian refugee camp. The portraits, mostly of children’s lives in the camp, are powerful and speak powerfully of hope against a background of deprivation.
