Based on the remarkable true story of a free black man in the 1840s who is tricked into slavery, this is a fascinating, gruesome and sometimes hard to watch film, with superior performances all around, especially Michael Fassbender as a particularly brutal slave owner. (And the story has a Canadian character who is a good guy!)
