The book upon which this film is based tells the incredible story of the first US soldiers — Special Forces — on the ground in Afghanistan in the months after 9/11 to take the fight to the Taliban. Known as the Horse Soldiers for the mode of transportation given to them by the Northern Alliance fighters they embedded with, they accomplished more, in a shorter time, than the US military and government expected. Quite the story. However, this film version, starring Chris Hemsworth, is not much more than just a decent, generally fast-moving, conventional war film, packed with clichés, some well-choreographed battle scenes, and some good points regarding different cultural perspectives. Don’t go looking for subtlety here — you won’t locate it.
